Motorola Moto G: Test of Mid-Range Phones at an Entry-Level Price

With the US model, Moto X Motorola was more on ease of use than on technical maximum lines. With the Moto G, Motorola continues this maxim: the Moto G has a large, but not huge screen (4.5 inches). The processor is fast, but no tempo wonder. And the housing is not made of aluminium, has but yet elegant. LTE is missing, there is UMTS in all internationally common frequencies with an annual rate of up to 21.6 megabit per second (HSPA +). In addition, the n standard (No 5 GHz) Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 is installed. The Moto G is available in two versions: as a cheap variant with only eight-gigabyte memory for 169 euro (RRP) and thirty euros more than 16 gigabyte model variant.

Design and processing

The plastic housing looks very solid, almost like a cast. The device itself is black, the arched back with Matt surface feels pleasant and lies well in the hand. You don’t, like the black back you swap them against a different color, about a squeak yellow with as pleasantly frosted surface. The plastic proved sensitive to scratches in the test, but hardly noticed small quirks in dyed plastic.

Screen

The screen is less than approximately at Samsung’s Galaxy S4 (five-inch) with 4.5 inches. Instead of full-HD resolution such as many current Superphones, the display has the smaller HD resolution 720 p (1280 x 720 pixels). This is 5S but absolutely adequate and about as sharp as the retina display of the four times as expensive iPhone for this screen size. The image quality and sharpness of the screen is very good for the price range. The display was a bit in the test, the angle dependence is something more than with higher-priced devices. The brightness was square with 481 candela / m neatly, slightly below the iPhone display.

The pace of work

The integrated quad-core processor from Qualcomm (Snapdragon 400) running 1.16 GHz clock frequency, an Adreno 305 is integrated with 450 megahertz than graphics processor. So the Moto reached G in the benchmark test Geekbench 3 (340 points in the single-core test, 1,160 points with multi core) at about the pace of the also very reasonable Medion life X something less than the pace of the Galaxy S3, but. No shame. In everyday life, responds the Moto G pretty fast (speed touch 1.90) and comes in the browser test on a very good (Note 1.41).

Software without ballast

A major selling point of the Moto G is the software: Motorola has waived the Android system to impose your own interface. This operation runs easily and fluently without ballast or too many confusing options comparable with Google’s Nexus 5. currently the Moto G with Android version is provided in 4.3, a free upgrade should follow on the brand new Android 4.4 differently than at most other Android manufacturers in the near future. The voice of the Moto X is missing though. Nevertheless, the software offers interesting Extras: as an Assistant will automatically mute the ring tones at night and date entries in the calendar. And the app Motorola migrate promises to take all information from one other older Android including SMS.

The camera: only five megapixel

The front camera shoots photos with up to 5 megapixel resolution. In the widescreen format (16:9) set at the factory, it reaches only 3.75 mega pixels. Providing the pictures for large prints or little details here makes the Medion life X magnifications sharper images. In addition, the camera has problems with white balance, images are either too red or too blue. In the laboratory the camera the vision test just the note received sufficient, the camera is therefore not to be recommended for holiday photos. The shutter lag is 0.5 seconds, while saving the recordings the Moto can be G but too long (1.27 seconds). The Moto records G in the small HD 720 p (1280 x 720) at 29 frames per second videos that get caught tend to be too red. Also, the camera videos is somewhat sensitive to lens, responding but fast on changes in brightness. The image stabiliser works only electronically and is little effective.

Memory: something scarce

The lowest with 169 euro version of the Moto G internal memory offers only eight gigabytes (GB). In the test device, but only 4.6 GB were available, occupied the rest of the operating system and preloaded apps. Disadvantage: Unlike as in the Medion life X nonextensible is the memory. Due to the combination of a small store and lack extensibility, there was a devaluation in the test. The version with 16 GB for $199, which therefore significantly better section in the test is therefore more recommended. Who still uses the eight GB variant, should regularly delete old photos and videos. Tip: This also Google drive is offered in addition to popular Fotocloud services such as dropbox, SkyDrive, or the Google photo backup. As to G Moto Google bought space on Google drive free additional 50 gigabytes. However, one must assume the offer within 30 days after the initial activation of the device, it is then fixed for 24 months.

Battery life

With eleven hours battery life typical Smartphone using the Moto not bad beats G. It should be for a full work day without new charging enough.

Irritated looks when unpacking

The Moto G packing out the first time, you miss a lot around the charger. Because the usual MicroUSB standard is used, can fill the machine but with an older charger. Or to load it via the supplied USB cable to the PC. Also a headset is missing. Speaking of audio: the sound from the headphone output was good in the test, in this respect, the phone with enough memory and additional headphones as a music player is good.

Conclusion: Motorola Moto G

Good workmanship, current software of views on the brand new Android 4.4: the Moto G in the approximately 30 euros more expensive 16 gigabyte model or the Extensible LTE version of Moto G is a price tip for all those who have no excessive demands on speed or camera. A disadvantage however is the non-expandable memory and the non replaceable battery. The eight-gigabyte version offers little usable memory. Who wants to store more than a handful of apps and even music and many photos on the phone, comes out only with the bargain version of the Moto G, if he deletes regular old images or heavily relies on cloud storage and streaming services.
