The psoriasis is a systemic inflammatory disease, which, contrary to what most people think, is not contagious. 

It is a pathology of genetic, autoimmune, chronic and cyclic, which is characterized by the appearance of lesions reddish (for standard plates), thick, and scaly, usually on the elbows, scalp, knees, and lumbar region.

Although there is no cure for this disease, it is known that there is a relationship between psoriasis and diet, it is essential to the adoption of healthy dietary habits to alleviate the crises and the symptoms of the disease.

CAUSES AND INCIDENCE OF PSORIASIS

Although it is unknown the exact cause of psoriasis, it is known that there is a connection between changes in immune disorders, heredity factors and environmental triggers, such as stress, certain types of drugs, the absence of sunlight, and the excess weight that can aggravate or promote the onset of illness.

Although it can arise at any age and affect both sexes, the psoriasis seems to arise with more frequency in young adults and after the age of 40, affecting approximately 2-3% of the Portuguese population.

The aspect, extent, evolution and severity of this disease are variable, and there may be cases in which the disease presents itself in mild form and it is a fast way, up to more complicated cases, which may lead to physical disability.

As already mentioned, this disease has no cure, and treatments aim to only improve the symptoms and appearance of the skin.
RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PSORIASIS AND FOOD

The power supply is critical to maintain a healthy lifestyle and in patients with psoriasis, this rule is no exception.

  1. EXCESS WEIGHT AND PSORIASIS

Indeed, the relationship between psoriasis and diet is direct, since an unbalanced diet can lead to, among other things, the excess weight and obesity.

Being obesity a disease chronic inflammatory, promotes the worsening of the crises of psoriasis.

As the body tends to produce more adipocytes (cells in the warehousing of fat) as a response to increased inflammation creates a vicious cycle that makes it even more difficult to keep track of the weight and the psoriasis.

On the other hand, the psoriasis tends to be more resistant to treatment in patients with excess weight and obesity.

Excess of fat in the areas of skin folds such as the underarms, groin and under the breasts, may increase the risk of infections fungal and bacterial.

In this sense, the practice of physical exercise should also be encouraged, in order to fight the excess weight and stress, which often is the major trigger of flares of psoriasis.

In addition to the relationship of psoriasis with the excess weight, there is another link between psoriasis and diet that is the existence of foods that help control psoriasis and foods that aggravate.

2. FOODS THAT HELP CONTROL PSORIASIS

In fact, and although there isn’t a specific diet for those suffering from psoriasis, it is known that some foods can help control the inflammation and alleviate the symptoms and crises characteristic of the disease.

In this sense, patients who suffer from this disease should choose foods rich in antioxidants, vitamin C, beta-carotene, folic acid, vitamin D, omega-3 and zinc, nutrients essential for strengthening the immune system.

Within these foods are:

·         FATTY FISH

Fish such as salmon, sardines, mackerel and fish oils by their richness in omega-3 help decrease the inflammation and alleviate the crises of psoriasis.
FRUITS AND VEGETABLES

The fruit and vegetables are rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fiber, nutrients that give these foods anti-inflammatory properties and help to combat the oxidative stress.

Both the fruit and the vegetables must be fresh and consumed in different ways.
WHOLE GRAINS

The cereal whole grain, including bread, rice and pasta whole grain should be privileged at the expense of its refined version, as they have more fiber and minerals that strengthen the immune system.

Additionally, confer a greater feeling of satiety, which helps weight control.

 

·         DRIED FRUITS AND OLEAGINOUS

Foods such as walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts, pine nuts, help in the control of inflammation, and by its richness in monounsaturated fats.

However, it is important that your consumption is moderate, as are foods with a high energy value associated with it.
DAIRY PRODUCTS SLIM

Milk, yogurt and cheese slim help not only in weight control but also to decrease the intake of saturated fat, a type of fat very harmful for the inflammation and for psoriasis.

 

·         WATER

A good hydration of the skin is a very important factor, because it helps reduce the itching and can increase the effectiveness of other treatments.

The freshly squeezed juices may also be an option, although it never should replace the fruit in the nature nor the water.

FOODS TO AVOID IN PSORIASIS

In turn, the relationship between psoriasis and food is also reflected in the foods that should be avoided by those who suffer this disease, food, these, most, promote inflammation and, consequently, aggravate the psoriasis.

1. RED MEATS

By the content in saturated fat, cause greater skin irritation.

  1. SPICY FOODS (PEPPER AND OTHER SPICES)

Increase the feeling of itching.

  1. SAUSAGES AND SMOKED

By the content of saturated fat and condiments.

  1. FOODS RICH IN SIMPLE SUGARS

Make it difficult to control weight.

  1. ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES

Alcohol promotes dehydration, can increase the itching, the risk of crisis and makes the condition more resistant to treatment, for it alters the metabolism of certain drugs, increasing their toxicity.

  1. TOMATO

If the patient experiences sensitivity to nickel, tomatoes should be avoided because it is extremely rich in this compound.

  1. FOODS WITH GLUTEN

Despite still not having demonstrated a direct and consistent, patients who suffer from psoriasis seem to benefit from the reduction of the consumption of gluten, a protein inflammatory present in cereals such as wheat, rye, barley and oats.
